Abel Gutiérrez Ortega, PhD

Director of Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, CIATEJ, Mexico

Abel works in a Federal Government Research Center located in the heart of one of the most important innovation ecosystems of Mexico. With a 14-year experience at CIATEJ, his research deals with the use of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering for the development and improvement of vaccines, mainly to the livestock industry. Lately, he has focused in swine and poultry vaccines against viral diseases that cause huge economic losses, like porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, porcine circovirus type 2, porcine epidemic diarrhea and avian influenza. Abel is the leading inventor of several patents and is in close contact with national and international veterinary companies, constantly seeking for licensing contracts of his technologies.

Abel trabaja en un Centro de Investigación del Gobierno Federal que se encuentra en el corazón de uno de los ecosistemas de innovación más importantes de México. Con 14 años de experiencia en CIATEJ, su trabajo de investigación involucra el uso de la Biotecnología y la Ingeniería Genética para el desarrollo y mejoramiento de vacunas, principalmente para la industria pecuaria. Últimamente, se ha enfocado a vacunas para cerdos y aves contra enfermedades virales que causan enormes pérdidas económicas, como el síndrome reproductivo y respiratorio porcino, circovirus porcino tipo 2, diarrea epidémica porcina e influenza aviar.  Abel es inventor principal en varias patentes y está en contacto estrecho con compañías veterinarias nacionales e internacionales, buscando constantemente contratos de licenciamiento de sus tecnologías.

Brian Walsh, BS, MBA

Brian tiene experiencia de primera mano en la adquisición, propiedad y operación exitosa de una pequeña empresa basada en tecnología. Su experiencia profesional también incluye funciones de desarrollo de productos, marketing y gestión en empresas científicas. Además, Walsh tiene experiencia en actividades de transferencia de tecnología, como evaluar invenciones para determinar su potencial comercial, revisar propuestas de subvenciones y realizar actividades de concesión de licencias. Walsh también se desempeñó como voluntario de desarrollo económico en Peace Corps-Mexico, donde enseñó talleres de comercialización de tecnología y fue mentor de investigadores y estudiantes en programas Lean Startup. Actualmente brinda asistencia centrada en la comercialización para ayudar a los empresarios a obtener fondos federales y mejorar su preparación para llevar sus innovaciones al mercado.En 2017, los presentadores – Abel Gutiérrez y Brian Walsh, aplicaron estas herramientas y técnicas mientras trabajaban juntos para comercializar una vacuna animal en México.

His professional background also includes product development, marketing, and management roles in scientific companies. In addition, Walsh has experience in technology transfer activities such as assessing inventions for commercial potential, reviewing grant proposals, and conducting licensing activities. Walsh also served as an economic development volunteer in Peace Corps-Mexico, where he taught technology commercialization workshops and mentored researchers and students in Lean Startup programs. He currently provides commercialization-focused assistance to help entrepreneurs obtain federal funding and to improve their readiness for taking their innovations to market. In 2017, the presenters – Abel Gutiérrez and Brian Walsh, applied these tools and techniques while working together to commercialize an animal vaccine in Mexico.

‘Lean Startup’ es un método para desarrollar un modelo de negocio que se centra primero en el cliente. En esta TechShop, aprenderá los conceptos básicos de lean startup a través de una herramienta llamada Business Model Canvas. Este gráfico visual presenta nueve bloques de construcción de modelos comerciales esenciales con un fuerte énfasis en garantizar que tenga un producto que los clientes desean y por el que realmente pagarán. También aprenderá sobre el descubrimiento de clientes, una técnica de entrevista de cliente abierta que se utiliza para informar su Business Model Canvas y, en última instancia, lo ayudará a reducir el riesgo de llevar su idea al mercado.

Lean start-up is a method of developing a business model that is customer-first. In this TechShop, you will learn the basics of lean startup through a tool called Business Model Canvas. This visual chart presents nine essential business model building blocks with a strong emphasis on ensuring you have a product that customers want and will actually pay for. You will also learn about customer discovery, an open customer interview technique used to inform your Business Model Canvas and ultimately help you reduce the risk of taking your idea to market.
